Clogged Shower Drain?
You are taking your regular morning shower and all of a sudden you realize you are standing in a puddle of water that won’t go away. Didn’t mean for your shower to turn into a bath? You may have a clogged shower drain! We’ve all had to deal with them at one point or another, and most of the time there are quick easy fixes that you can do yourself.

How do I keep my shower drain from getting clogged?
Prevention is the best thing that you can do so that you never have to deal with the bigger clogged shower drain problems. Here is a list of 4 preventative measures you can take:
- Keep hair out! If you don’t already have one, get a shower drain cover with fine holes so that hair isn’t allowed to pass through into your pipes. Too much hair can not only cause small clogs in your shower drain, but also lead to big problems when all that hair gets stuck in your main line.
- Run boiling or very hot water down your drain about once every month. This should help break up clogs that have been accumulating.
- One cup of baking soda, followed by one cup of vinegar. Just like running hot water, this is a good practice that you can do about once a month to prevent any large clogs from accumulating.
- Try to stay away from chemical drain cleaners! They can be fine if used occasionally, but if overused they can not only be bad for your pipes and harmful to your skin.
If your drain is already clogged, some things you can try to solve the problem include:
- Plunging your clogged shower drain with about an inch of water in the base. This sometimes helps loosen build ups and gets your water to drain normally again.
- Use a drain-and-trap auger (a tool for clearing clogs) and move it back and forth. This may trap the debris that is clogging your drain, or push the clog into larger main drains.
